Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are still valid if you become mentally incapable of managing your own affairs - an ordinary Power of Attorney ceases to have effect at this point. LPAs are for people who want someone to act on their behalf if the time comes that they no longer have the mental capacity to make their own decisions, they are a more permanent (or lasting) arrangement.
Another key difference between the two is that an ordinary Power of Attorney only gives authority for the appointed attorney to manage your financial affairs. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives the attorney the ability to make decisions about your health and care in addition to your finances.
